i have about a 100 gallon pond in my backyard and every time i put anacharis and hornwort , they just brown out and die. the pond is about 1 year old. I've tried over the summer through winter, is it getting to much sun? it gets sunlight when the sun comes up to when the sun goes down. i have some water hardy lilies im waiting to plant when the water gets warmer, anyone know how to keep pond plants from dying? i live in southern california, zone 8b i think.

Both of those plants are tropical, and can withstand MUCH higher light levels than you get in california. How warm is your pond?

Are you letting the Anacharis float at the surface or planting it in the substrate? Anacharis and I believe Hornwort do best as floaters in the pond. I use Ancharis in my pond in the summer (I live in Chicago) and I plant it in the gravel at the bottom. It doen't really start growing until it reaches the surface at which point it seems to grow inches per day. The reason I directly plant is because I have a skimmer box that houses my pump. If I let it float, which it prefers, it would most likely get sucked into the skimmer. Also what kind of fish do you have? Goldfish like to nibble on Anacharis as well as many other kinds of fish. The same can be said about having no fish. With out fish poop their is no nutrients for the plants.
