I have 10 red jewels of many different sizes. lately 2 of them have started chasing everyone around quite a bit , how do u tell the difference between the male and female? and do other jewels eat the fry as well
?

usually youd have to wait till they grow up, the females will be smaller in comparison and the males are a very darker colour red. you could also have a look at their underside, but i feel that puts to much stress on them.

Its hard while there small but if u look at them long enough you can see subtle changes in color appear. While the female with also have a red tint the males would be much stornger and might change depeding on his mood.

The females are usually redder in color than the males. The males tend to be longer and thinner than the females. Has the pair started cleaning a site for egg laying? What size are the jewels?

Yes, the other fish will eat the fry, although they are very good parents.

i have a mated pair and the female likes to be fatter every 2-3 weeks than the male and the male gets almost black under his chin and on the top of his head the female stays bright red

mine the females are smaller and a lot brighter red, the males are bigger and the red is a lot darker.

When stressed both sexes are the same color.

i dont know whats going on with you ppls :screwy: fish but, but i have 2 female jewels and 1 male and the male is bigger yes, but it is also the brighter fish and the females are darker
