how do undergravel filters work and what do i need to set one up for my 55g?
noe of my friends have them in their tanks so i need help on things i need, how to set up, maintinence, ect.

don't bother...

IDK but Dont you need a powerhead or something? The powerhead should be connected to a pipe which sucks up the crap from under the gravel....Well that is what I always thought of it as...

they work but are pretty old school. a better system is a reverse system. keeps dirt out of the gravel and with a pre filter turns the hole aquarium substrate into a filter.i have wondered about using this system but instead of gravel get large foam pads on the base of the aquarium.

Conventional systems use an air lift method to turn your gravel into a biological filter. Revers flow systems use a powerhead to put water through the gravel to achieve the same effect, but it keeps crap from building up under it.

they are oldschool... but i still like them...

they are great for breeding snails and kulie loaches..
