this is my method. a 32 gal trash bucket i got for 9.99. And I Keep at leatst 50 gal jugs all over (outside for a few days poke holes in the lids for gas escape and keep out dirt, then inside till needed) Keeps all 5 tanks prestine!

Oh yeah there is active substrate that was de boo bood glass bowl upsidedown to hold the airstone!! Proly not the most suffistocated set up but cheap and easy to keep an eye on WQ!

Here in sunny SoCal our tap water has a high level of ammonia so I'm thinking about building a similar set up with an airating powerhead driven sponge filter and a rubbermaid tub.

Good idea! the concept is the same. only you need a more powerfull biofilter mine is just the rocks but they work great rotate them to keep them "alive" use an extra suction cup that fits snugg on the airstone it will float otherwise. I learned this the hard way took a couple days.

The large sponge filters will be rotated with established ones in the 55g quarentien tank.

I use a python and add water straight to the tank, then add prime. Much easier than aging.

I live in the desert we have horrible water that people don't even drink (The whole town not just my house) I would never throw it on my fish. and i use no chems, on a reg basis. I do have all meds and chems on hand at all times I just think it's admirable to add the least amount of chems and achieve healthy fish!

I'm with you on that one. The ammonia content here is enough to keep the sponge filter active on its own but it's going to take some experimentation to figure out the right ballance. As it is I keep water changes to a minium and all of the tanks are very lightly stocked.

aging deff lets you experiment without killing fish! And if you are not a chemist its proly good to learn how to get your water to do what you want it to not supprise you with what it just did to you!
