how do you breed red belly pirahnas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My experience breeding reds:

--55gl Glass
--One pair consisting of a 9in male and a 8in female....Usually the females are more round and plump(full of eggs) in the belly region, while males stay thinner....
--Substrate is 2-3inches of pea gravel purchased at Home Depot.
--Temperature set at 82degrees.
--To induce spawning, I feed them heavily with shrimp and beef heart....I then do 25%water changes every other day...The water changes sort of replicate the rainy season...When the pair's colors start darkening up, I know I'm on the right track...The male will start "blowing" on one part of the tank, creating a nest....The two will mate....

Note that the bred for me in the very first week of owning them, I was thrilled....I was'nt even on planning to breed them yet...The 55g was meant to be temporary, just untill my 100g was done cycling...SO imagine this adult pair PLUS one fat 10in female and (3)5-6inchers all in one 55g....As soon as I spotted them eggs, I left the pair to the 55 and tossed the rest of the shoal in the 100..............:headbang2
