Very curious about how this process works. I like umbeekings gorillus variants I would love to experiment with breeding eventually. I have a male Ebjd that is growing quick now and should b ready to breed in a few months.

You breed a fish with a certain trait, take EBJD for example, you breed2 and the the best ones of their fry and breed them, then continue usin the best of the best to develop a color morph

Yes, it can't be a cross. A color variant is still the same species, just different color. With EBJD in particular you can't produce viable fries from such, has to be a BGJD x EBJD or BGJD x BGJD.

You can start with a specific color trait present already and continue breeding that, or find individuals with signs of a specific color and selectively breed for that color over time to hopefully make that color clearer and clearer.
