im looking to upgrade to somewhere between those sizes and ive only had smaller single filter tanks... im looking for possible ideas on how to set up the filtration system. i prefer not drilled tank might just go with oversized filters on both sides? idk howd you do it and hows the weekly care?

If you don't want a sump/ wetdry, I think you will have to do multiple large canisters. There is a thread here about sun sun filters. Fx5's are good, too. Personally, I use a big central wetdry with canisters on the individual tanks for polishing.

Sumps or wet drys are really the only way to go, IMHO, when you start getting into the bigger sized tanks. Makes filtering much easier.
If you buy the tank already drilled with overflows, often referred to as "Reef ready," you wouldn't have to do it yourself.
The thing is with bigger tanks, you either get much bigger fish or a lot more fish, which ramps up the mess they make. If you went with HOB filters, you'd be changing the media every couple of days, assuming you maintain the tank properly. I went from HOB on my smaller tanks straight to sumps. I've never really used cannister filters.

I've got two canisters on my 200G and it works fine for me... although i know this doesn't work for every one, since it really depends on stocking...

As for cleaning, i clean out my filters maybe every 3 - 6 months depending if they need a clean or not, as for water changes, same as with my small tanks, at least once a week around 30% - 50% depending on how messy it is...

IMO, its easier than running a smaller tank. Just takes longer to do water changes.

Original setup is a ***** though, especially if you've never done anything so big before. Sumps are the way to go though. the idea is extremely confusing at first, but you learn a lot and you get a feeling like hitting an "easy" button.

damn fat homer you have a pic?
every1 else lol uhh do you have a pic of how and where your sump is hooked up too with the overflows
and whatdo you use to clean the larger tank

I have a classic eheim 2217 and 2 HOB's my 150g tank clean and it is cleannnn.

My 125g had two of the biggest aquaclear HOB's, a magnum HOT and a Penguin 220. But I also used magic that came in a bottle labeled "not overstocked" that seemed to make it manageable. The tank only had, at its max, 0ne Oscar, one paratilapia polleni, 5 raphael cats, one L200, and the occasional new or rotated out catfish. Only fed the tank twice a week once the Oscar was over 12". Nitrates rarely broke 20ppm in a week.

ehh ill see how i do with cannisters at first theres no harm done if i triple the bigger more powerful ones up besides an extra 10 bucks on my electric bill haha
