I have a gravel vaccum and I just kinda go over the top of the sand without sucking the sand up. But I seems like I dont get anything? Note I have a 120 with only two fish. How often do you clean the sand?

What do you mean you dont get anything? Do you mean you are not sucking anything up?

I have a syphon hose that i connect to my water hose and that does the job. When i used my kitchen faucet that water pressure was too weak and wouldnt suck anything up. I also use a pvc pipe and a hose barb to create a tool stick that gives me better control and helps me get close to the sand with out sucking it up. My tank is 30" wide so it helps. I clean it once a week but some some people scoop the crap out everyday with a net.

Use one of these
Just start the siphon and skim above the top layer of sand to get any gunk out.
Don't worry it takes some practise but when you get used to it, its quite easy.

I just use the nylon hose that came with my siphon, and some times I will stir the sand up alittle to get the crap to float.

he is right... stir method rocks... it actually helps get into tight spots without moving decor... you start circling while pumping and it creates some sort of trifecta of vacuum power...

 no seriously it works.. just wanted to turn it into a pineapple express quote... if you don't want to do water changes all the time which was my problem because my fish are huge and love to poop right after i water change... some people suggested a turkey baster.... i'm gonna try it this week i'll post how it works!

It hooks up to the sink. I guess I dont see any crap getting sucked up. Maybe bc I only have two fish theres not much crap yet lol.

Swish it around then slope it, higher toward the back of the tank. After it settles suck off the top.
