how do you get a gar off live food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got all of my preds off of live as follows;

1. always introduce minnows at the same corner of the tank for each feeding.
2. After a few days, the fish will anticipate the feeding by congregating at the "feeding corner".
3. Drop one minnow. Then, one stick/pellet. The preds should by now snap at anything from the "feeding corner".
4. Add more sticks/pellets to their feeding schedule until they're on full stick/pellet diets.

This process took less than a week to convert all of my preds. I haven't fed out minnows in months.

The first day I got my gar he immidiatly understood where the feedingcorner was and ate out of my hand when the other fish ate.
Nowadays the whole bunch comes over and waits 5" under the feedingspot until the Gar has taken his first fish, then the rest come to eat.
I handfeed him but he's a bit aggressive when taking the food...lol

DO NOT STARVE! just give it feeders and every feeding give it some prepared food. if it doesnt eat it take it out. repeat everyday. evertually it will take it.

a technique i have found that has always worked with gars (some faster than others) is to use a piece of hard acrylic tubing and stick a silversides or elongate piece of tilapia at the end...just wiggle it in front of the gar and it will eventually take it (may take a few tries/few days). eventually they will take these foods when you drop them in, and eventually they will eat these items from various levels of the water column. good luck--

Thank E_americanus for instructions. I'll try. I use a large plastic tweezers.

Good advise from Sol and Phil, have tried both methods personally, and they work. I've personally found that with regards to gar, solomon's method works best when converting the fish from live food to prepared. And Phil's method works best when converting the fish from one form of prepared food to another (shrimp to pellet)
