I'm looking for a better way to heat a large tank. I don't like the idea of 3 or 4 submersible heaters in a large tank but b/c of past experience I don't want to use one large heater and cook everything in the tank when it goes bad. So what do you people do? Why is the glass tube the only type of heater available? I would like to have a small heat pump for my tank, it could heat or cool the tank depending on the season. Any other ideas out there?

I have 2 Cascade 1500 canister filters on my 120g. I use the Hydor ETH 300watt in-line heaters, one on each canister. It has been a great heater and I love the fact it is not in the tank. The only problem is the size of the tubing; on some canisters the tubing size would be too big so you would have to use a reducer or Y off a seperate line for the heater. Otherwise awesome heater that can be had for around $45 on-line.

I wish I could heat the room but my basement is not conducive to that.

Buy one of those butane canteens and attach it to a grill and put it under your tank. Guaranteed warm or better!
On a serious note, ask your lfs to order you a higher output heater if you don't like having 1-3 heaters per side of your tank.
I do believe 2 300 watts should suffice on a higher output though, considering it's very hard to overheat larger tanks to begin with. Or spend some money on the house and get some insulation (non asbestos, unless that's your fancy)

I heat the room instead of individual tanks.

What would the room temperature need to be at to keep a 210 gallon glass tank at 80 degrees?

I am going to set up a stainless steel heat exchanger and use my gas hot water heater to heat my tanks.
