How do you measure your fish?

I usually eyeball it. Using fish I know the length of or based on the width of the tank to compare with. Or I’ll put a ruler against the glass and hope they swim past slow enough to see lol.
Gotten easy with the leporinus as he is half blind.
For a few fish I’m curious about, I’ll measure them after they die:

I wait until it’s water change day and they are helplessly submissive on their sides in about 2 inches of water ?

my male synspilum/melanura is 10 inches

I measure them with a professional tailors measuring tape. Their girth measurement is quite easy, their inside leg not so much!!

Reminds me of that 4 foot tetra I caught the other day...
