I was always taught to measure from tip to base of tail (caudal peduncle) but I see many shots of fish next to a tape or ruler stating the fish is "X" inches long but it includes the tail. So, what do you think, total length or to peduncle? I do know that if I'm buying or selling a fish I get the other persons definition first, so there are no hard feelings, I'm just asking to see what the general consensus is.

hmmmm,i always thought it was tip of the mouth to the end of the tail.total length.but what do i know i'm a little :screwy:

yup deffinetly tip to tip...ive never heard of that thought but that might be for rays...b/c they are measured in diameter

Agreed. TL, Total length.

depends on the fish.. game fish are tip to tail.. hobbie fish are tip to tip.. fish for sale are tip to tip but need to be listed as "total" length

People either use SL (standard length - nose to tail base) and TL (total length - nose to tip of tail). I personally use TL.

The way I understand it... TL, or Total Length, is from the tip of the fish's nose to the tip of it's tail...

But I can also understand why some people would only count to the base of the tail, as this is the end of the meat body of the fish.

Either way the important part is that both people know what scale you are using...
