I have what I believe are a couple of young carpinte "escondido" around 2". I have read some of the bigger texas/carpinte threads on here and i did not find a lot of information on sexing them. I have heard some stuff about a black spot on the dorsal fin, the shape of their tubes when they drop, and the shape of the dorsal fin. Can someone elaborate on this? How big do they have to be to see the signs?

yeah around the size yours are already or would be more prominent at 3in, females should have a black spot in their dorsal fins though this isnt 100% and they may not show it all the time, their bodies are also more elongated and slimmer while males will be more tall-bodied with a steeper forehead (have more pronounced forehead though not really quite a nuchal hump) easier way would be to just vent them though once they get to 3in and then you can know for sure
