i was wondering how this is done since everyone on this website seems to know which of their flower horns are male and which are female....Me and my uncle are having a growing contest to see how big we can get our flower horns, however, when the maddness is over i would like to breed them...They are both red flower horns...his is alittle more blue though....How do i know if i have a male or a female?

Well I look to see who lays eggs and then I know  When they get big I think you can sex them but I'm not sure how.

If you want to grow your the fastest you will need to set up a drip system.

what do you mean drip system?

there are a lot of ways to sex your fh but it varies in accuracy.

venting has the highest accuracy. "u" shape for female and "V" for male. this is done by looking closely on the vent.

press method 50-50 accuracy, this is done by when you slightly pressing the fh abdomenl to the vent, if you see a fluid coming out its a female.

black/dark spot on dorsal fin has "low accuracy" also, this is made on ocular inspection of dorsal fin, if a black spot is noted its a female.

i hope this help bro! ;) best still with 100% accuracy is to wait for your fh to lay her first eggs, they normally are capable to lay ann egg at 6 mos and up.

thanks dude...mine does have a black ocular spot on it's tail...i guess i'll have to wait and see for her to lay eggs to know for sure....will the fh lay eggs without a male present?....Do you think it's possible to breed a fh with a peacock bass...if i have a female flower horn

A drip system drips in a certain number of gallons per hour and it keeps the water clean and that helps the fish grow faster.

that ocular spot is comon among fh.

fh would definitely lay her eggs but won't hatch without a male.

have not tried breeding peacock bass with fh, iam not to familiar. are bass live bearers or egg layers? ;)
