Hey guys im getting a 240 gallon fish tank soon and im going to be needing a sump, how big of a tank will i need for the sump? thanks

Depends on what you want it to do. I have a 100 gal rubbermaid under my 100 gal tank as a pre-sump that feeds into a 50 gal barrel sump before returning water to the tank. Overkill you say? maybe. But if you're going to keep big eaters and want water stability it's great, you can safely store heaters, and media out of sight, or if your fish eat plants if you want a place for them as a nitrate filter, or even have a compartment for fry, or a fish that's getting beat up and needs a rest.

Depends on what you want it to do.

I'll second that. I have a 300 that's been in the works for some time. I am now planning on at least a 200 gallon home built sump. My thoughts are that it will continuously contain about 150 gallons of water bringing my total to 450 gallons. Now when I do a 25% water change of 113 gallons I will still have a net of 37 gallons of water in the sump. I can now fire my system back up filling the tank then slowly add new water to the sump bringing it back up to 150 gallons.

Or you could easily find a used 55 gallon tank to build a sump. Like duanes said, it all depends on what you want to do.

i say at least a 55gallon i wouold go with 100-150gallon plywood sump.

ok weel you could screw 4 panels of ply wood to gether.(with wood screws) then you seal it some sort of sealer man yout there look at the DIY page. they have many sumps there just lok for them. i haevn't build one tey but other people have you could alwasy make the stand you sump.

cool, i didnt know they made pond liner or anything like that. I was thinking that a regular liner might get into the water. any clues on where i could get pond liner?

Just make one out of as large a plastic container as big as you can fit, alot easyer than making a plywood one.But if you want to go that way I would seal the plywood box with epoxy resin inside and out to protect it from water befor you put the pond liner in.
