shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I made a stupid mistake that i think killed off a lot of beneficial bacteria and i think my tank is going through a mini cycle. i have no other tanks and dont want any of my fish to die. are there any steps i can take to help them get through this or will they all dye? right now nitrites are pretty high. i did a 40% change last night and this morning nitrites were still high.

Do daily 50% water changes, need to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels under.25 ppm. Also treat the whole tank with prime brand water conditioner. Prime will detoxify the ammonia and nitrites but will not remove them. Reduce feedings.

Depending on type of fish you have, raising the temp will help speed up the bacteria growth and and aquarium salt will reduce stress.

unless you did something to your substrate you should still have some bb in your tank

i took all the substrate out!!! and i also rinsed off the sponges and biomax in my two AC 50's, but i did rinse them in used aquarium water. my only hope is i also have a penguin 350 and i have not touched the biowheels. do you need substrate to have bacteria or can your filters provide an adequate supply? i have a fluval 405 i havnt setup yet but im going to fill two trays with biomax and the rest with scrubbies.

Ask your lfs or a buddy for some live bio-balls or filter goop to seed your tank. Don't go overboard on the water changes or you will just pro-long the cycling process if the tank did indeed crash. Your better off using prime daily to mitigate the effects of the ammonia and nitrites and do a 50% water change every 2-3 days, imo...
