Ive been reading a lot of stuff and ive seen some people talk about pregnant rays eating heads off their peacock bass and such, I was wondering how you tell if they are pregnant or where to look? I am thinking she could possibly be since my yellow acara turned up dead last night. Just trying to come up with who would have killed him. He was too big for my catfish to have eaten and ive never had a catfish only eat the back end of a fish before.

Rays dont have to be pregnant to eat the heads off fish. Some do it just for fun.

Had one ray they would bite the head off fish and then swim up the the glass with the rest of its body in her mouth just to show me her prize, and she wasn't even pregnant. If she is pregnant you will notice a large hump start to grow on her back, just in front of the tail. This could also just be your ray getting fat, you know forsure when you start seeing movement in that hump, looks kinda like something from the alien movies.

If biting off the heads of things is a tell tale sign when someone is pregnant then I shouldn't probably be here right now as my wife would have bit off my head twice and then still told me to go grab her an ice cream!!!

All joking aside, just look at he back of your ray for changes in size. You will also see bit marks on her disc if the male has done the job. Eventually you will see movement of the pups rolling around inside of her and at the end the pregnancy the movement stops and her stomach will drop to the bottom and then she delivers the pups soon. Check some photos and videos in the stingray section and you will see what pregnant females look like.

Ok thanks everyone. I think she may have just killed it. She doesnt look any fatter than normal. She had a few bite marks a month ago but those have healed almost back to normal. It surprises me that anyone could catch the acara and its even more surprising that the red devil is still alive and he's only around 5". Threw him in at 2" thinking he would be a feeder fish but nobody ate him.
