How does a sump work?

I would really like to build a sump for my turtle tank and I would like to know how they work or how they operate and a base price for a sump for a 55 gallon. It doesn't really explain how the sump works on anything I see. Please help and I would like to know if I could keep any fish or plants in a sump If so what type

I had a small "sump" on my 55 gallon turtle tank and it kinda worked I had gravel scrubbies and a few crayfish in it and my problem was the intake to it if you tank isn't drilled do not do it you will have constant issues with overflows and it is a pain in the azz

Id also like to know are they motor driven or gravity fed?
