and how long can they go without food? i have been weaning a gar off live food for about two weeks and he absolutely refuses to eat anything else. (market shrimp, sinking carnivore pellets). i tried putting a piece of shrimp meat onto a mono-line and waving it around in his face. it sparked a response at first, but he spat it out. after two or so strikes, he stopped. the gar hasn't eaten in two weeks now. will it starve to death? there is also a clown knifefish in the same tank as him who refuses to eat prawn. the knifefish hasn't eaten in almost 3 weeks. anyone has any idea on how to get them to eat?

how big are they?

if the gar is around smaller than 10 inches just feed it feeders, dont worry as they get big they will learn to eat prepared food.

it is about 8inches. if i put feeders in, the endlicheri who is now on a steady diet of prawns will eat them and stop eating prawns as well. but how long can the gar go without food? and do gars eat food on the bottom of the tank? like hikari carnivore sinking pellets or frozen prawn

the gar will eat prepared food as mine is about 8.5 inches already ate pellets and mp,the gar can go without food for maybe 1 month.yes the gar eat food at the bottom sometimes at the top for floating pellets

how big is your tank

how long did you have to starve him? did you use any tricks, such as making the piece of prawn move like a live feeder, or something?
its 125 gallons

Continue to feed feeders but make sure you always drop them in the same spot. After a few days drop in a dead feeder and the gar will hit it just the same as a live one. After another few days substitute a prawn or piece of tilapia and he will again hit it. I've trained a couple gars this way and it works very well. Good luck.

does anyone know how to get a small clown knifefish to eat?? i got one but he isnt eating the bloodworms i got him.
