I understand the method of sexing a carpintis is by the black blotch about midline in the dorsal fin. My question is what size/age does this generally become possible? I have some very small juvies from Ken, and on the biggest one and the middle sized ones it looks as if there are black faded blotches but I haven't been able to get a good solid look yet - whether the lighting is bad for their angle, or they just refuse to put the fin up all the way to give a good view. The other 2 are just too small to attempt looking at it, and the bigger 2 may be as well. I was just trying to get an idea on things.

Thanks

my two are about three inches and one has developed the blotch but it's not always there.

its hard if your not venting, overall shape and fins comes into play

Most folks have said that if it has a black blotch on the dorsal fin, then it is female and is just as guaranteed as venting. Is that not truly the case?

About 3in you should be able to tell.As for experience with them if you see the black blotch once then you know. When i would just walk into a room it would stress them enough to fade away as they get older the shyness goes away.
