I was fishing the tidal basin last year with my cousin, had no luck so we moved a little ways away, a kid goes to our spot, pulls a bluegill out of a bucket and sticks it under a bobber, casts it out and a few minutes later he pulls up a 3' longnose gar. total morale booster for us after standing in the sticky summer sun for about 2 hours with no luck. That was in DC, but that begs the question for me, how far north do gar in general go?

I'd say it really depends on the specie. As for shortnose gar I can safely say I've seen then as far north as Minnesota but as for how far south they go I've got no clue.

We get alligator gar in Illinois, but I don’t think go they through Wisconsin.
