Just as it says in the title ,

My LFS have some 4inch Gar's for sale , not sure what type as they just have the name Gar next to them .

I would love to get one but i am not sure how fast they grow and the only tank i could put one in is a my 120Gal tank along with a mixed group of fish ranging from 3.5inch upto 13inch .

Also would he be ok in a tank with other fish bigger than him at 4inch ?

Fish in the 120Gal are - 1 6inch Oscar , 1 8inch Blackbelt Cichlid , 1 8inch Jaguar Cichlid , 1 13inch Common Pleco , 1 7inch Silver Awo' , 1 3,5inch and 2 5inch Severum , 1 5inch Port Acara , 1 5inch Jack Dempsy , 1 10inch Tire Track Eel .

i am planning on building a largeish indoor pond to house my Silver Awo' and my Oscar and am thinking on gettng a RTCxTSN and couple more fish too , to put in the pond when it is done and i was thinking that a Gar would be a good fish to get to go in the pond too .

Gars with any of those cichlids is a very bad idea. That is if the gar at your LFS is a true gar at all the name gar has been abused way to much by LFS to make the sale.

I agree 100% Gator!

Aside from that...what species of gar is it? That's like me asking...How fast does a dog grow?

Yer but if i would ask how fast do Oscars grow , people would say about an 1inch - 1.5inch a month til it hits arould 10inch and then will slow down . Thats basicly want i am asking but if you two are saying that i should not house one with any Cichlids i will just have to forget about getting one and look for something else which will get large enough to house with a Silver Awo' , an Oscar and maybe a RTCxTSN .

There are 7 species of gar! Which one??? They all have different growth rates and max sizes. Either way, none of them should be housed with the cichlids listed above...that's generally a bad idea.

Gars typically grow pretty fast as most predatory fish do, my longnose has grown at least 9" in 4 months to give you an idea. Alligator Gars on the other hand grow at an astronomical rate 24" or more in captivity in about 12 months since in their natural habitats as adults they are most likely the apex fish predator. Just on a side note that RTCxTSN is a pretty fast grower also and he's probably going to look at a lot of those fish as snacks especially the Aro, eel and the smaller of the cichlids in that tank.

sounds like skipping it is the best idea...those cichlids are too big compared to the gar now anyway, and would likely bully it or eat it.

even though there are multiple species of gars, the first season of growth is generally fast across all 7 species. in the wild all gar species can attain around 13-15" in the first growing season. in captivity you can count on 12" within the first season if fed/house properly...some species, like gator gars can reach almost 2' in their first year, others like the Florida/spotted/shortnose are around 12-15" in their first year.--

Yep i know that they ( the Catfish ) like to eat smaller fish , but i was hoping on getting the RTCxTSN early next year when the pond is done . The Awo' and the Oscar are in the 120Gal tank growing out and wont be put in the pond until they both hit around the 10/ 12inch mark . The RTCxTSN is about 10inch at the moment looking at him in the shop but without gettng a tape measure out i couldnt be 100% sure .

The Eel wont be going in the pond with the RTCxTSN never the other fish apart from the Silver Awo' and Oscar.

I was just going to put the Gar' in the 120Gal tank to growout get bigger while i build the pond .

pics will tell us what gar it is my friend
and I'm pretty sure when the RTCxTSN grows up he will still try to eat the oscar (could be wrong though)

Ok then. I wont be able to get any pictures but it doesnt matter now dont think ill get one now , i am not sure if ill put the Oscar on the pond now i am still sorting out what fish ill move into the pond and what new ones to get to go in the pond .
