I keep my 90g cichlid tank at roughly 80-82 degrees in the winter. for some reason the water evaporates so fast that 2-3 times a week im adding water to keep the 2 HOB filter's output noise down. is this normal?? does anyone else have this problem?

Do you have tops on your tank? Even if you do, that much surface area, with that much surface agitation, at that temperature will evaporate quite fast.

depends on how we'll coverd the tank is i have a tub sealed with the lid it came with and i don't notice any change in the water level all week then i do a water change

I have a 10 gallon thats coverd by a mesh screen men't for reptile cages and i lose about an inch of water every two days to evaporation

My 55 is like this just with no top and loses 2 inches between water changes(every week).

Usually in the winter when you start heating your house, evaporation increases in fish tanks because the air inside your house is drier. If you have hot-air heat, it can be especially dry.

the cover on my tank is ment for a 55g. so it only covers the front half. for the back half i have 2 glass cut-outs designed to fit the area. i agree with Wheat about the air being more dry in the winter since i do not have this problem in the summer time. i just wanted to find out if this was a common situation..
