I will be getting a 120gallon (my first monster tank) with my bonus at the end of the year. Currently I have 4 tinfoil barbs in my 55 gallon, they are about 3" now, and was curios on how big they will be by the time I get my 120 (January next year). Everywhere I looked says they grow relatively slow like bala sharks, but they eat like crazy. Also what are some good tank mates for them when I move them?

They grow to 14 inches.
I've never had one myself but I have heard of people keeping them in tanks a good bit smaller than 120, so I'd assume it would be fine for them.

Hi,

Could be well off the mark here but are there not two types of tin foils?

Tin Foil Barb: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/cyprinids/tinfoilbarb.php
Red Tailed Tin Foil Barb: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/cyprinids/RedtailTinfoilBarb.php

We "rescued" a couple of the red tailed type and in a year of having them they have grown a little and seemed to have topped out at about 9", this is in a 400 litre tank - they will be moving into a 900 litre in the next week or two so may grow a bit more but i doubt it will be much.

Ours will eat like mad but overall are pretty placid, tank mate wise they are with Bala Sharks, Violet Sharks, Clown Loaches, Flying Foxes and some Gouramis plus a few others- i'd say as long as its big enough not to be eaten then jobs a good 'un.

Cheers

You would be fine till Jan. I used to keep them with large barbs and other large schooling fish. Red tailed cigar shark---leptobarbus hoevenni makes great tankmates for them. These fish willl never hide and always stay out in the open. They are what dragged me away from the always hiding SA cichlids.
