How frequent does a crayfish molt?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It depends on how fast it grows

it depends on the species, id need to see pics, they dont shed as frequantly when they are bigger maybe once every month when young and only once every 6 when adults. It also depands on the ph and amount of calcium in their diet.

When I first got my C. Quad she was only two inches long. She molted the first time about three days after I got her, then again about a week after that, then again about 2 and a half weeks later, and then again about a month after that. It's been about three weeks since that last time she shed her skin and she is about 6 inches long (not including the antennae which would about double that length). Seems like the older they get the less often they molt. One really great thing I've noticed about mine is that everytime she sheds her bright blue coloration and the red spots on her tail become more vibrant.

Here is a visual representation of her shedding schedule thusfar (each period is a day and the S represents when she molted):

...S.......S................S..............................S.....................

I'm feeding it super worms everyday so hopefully it grows fast.. lol
How big of a tank does it need for itself? Is 25g sufficient?
& what is the max size these crays can grow?

I've read that a 20 gallon tank will be sufficient for 1 full grown C. Quad as long as you keep a pretty regular routine of water changes. According to most of the websites I've researched they rarely get bigger than 8", but I've met some people on here that say they can get 10-12" long. By the way, in case you were wondering, yours is a male...the females don't have the red spots on the claws like that and are more blue.

the females get bigger but the males can still reach 10" a 25g should be fine, yours is a nice size id expect it to get al ittle bigger, its got great colours on the claws as well
