I have decided to add more variation to my bichir's diet instead of just pellets. Tried cricket, mealworms, frogs.
They absolutely refuse to touch the crickets. The mealworm's tough exterior prove to be a challenge for them to swallow.

So far, they readily accepts frogs and have ease munching them. Are they healthy? Are they diseased timebombs like commercial feeders?
I have thought of a new feeding schedule and would implement once I know frogs are safe.

Monday - Floating Pellets + FD krill
Tuesday - Sinking Pellets
Wednesday - Sinking Pellets
Thursday - Sinking Pellets
Friday - Floating Pellets
Saturday - Frogs
Sunday - No feeding

How does that sound?
FYI, both floating pellets and sinking pellets are Hikari's foodstick and carnivore sinking pellets respectively.

I think there's always a chance of parasites in aquatic dwelling animals , although maybe less in frogs. I usually qurantine for only a few days compared to 2 weeks for feeders. Another feeder i've found to be quite good is small Channa micropeltes.

As long as they aren't a toxic species there shouldn't be a problem. They eat them in the wild.

Agree but my greatest worry is that they would transfer parasites over to the bichirs

I condition my Bichirs with tadpoles/frogs and earthworms, if there is a problem in the waterway where the frogs are collected the frogs will be the first to go. I consider them to be a very safe live food.

That's why always quarantine before feeding and also check the LFS for any signs of disease before buying. A healthy feeder is no different than feeding a quality pellet.

I have no idea how to quarentine frogs. What should I feed them to keep them alive?
