I have about 8 goldfish that love to dig up the fluorite gravel in my 200 gal tank. In the past, I had plants that didn't really need gravel: java ferns, java moss (became lunch), anubias, anacharis (...dinner). I wanted to fill up some more space with plants so I thought I would try some amazon swords and some vals.
The only problem was the goldfish are always digging into the substrate after they eat. This leads to the plants becoming unearthed. So I had an idea to drill holes into some left over lace rocks that I had from an old cichlid tank. I would then put the plants through the hole and the rock should protect the plants.
Initially, after I put the plants into the rocks, I covered the rocks up with the substrate. The next day when I took the pics, the goldfish had already dug up all the substrate that was on top of the rocks.
So far the plants are still planted, but the vals and one of the swords have evidence of being nibbled on. Anyone see any potential pitfalls with this plan? Maybe some room for improvement??
