How is it possible to NOT have a sub-forum in ancient fish for Amia Calva?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha, I have to agree with that!
I've kept both, so that's just my opinion. I'm probably gonna get alot of hate for it, but who cares. :naughty: Flame suit on! :evil_lol: :flamed:

The lungfish forum is there because there are numerous species of lungfish, and while there may not be very many posts, a lot of people keep them. There's no reason to dedicate a sub-forum to one species of fish. Not that many keep bowfin either, they're not readily available. Also, they're native fish. The ancient fish forum is only here because all of the fish in it fail to fall into any other categories.

And please, try not to be so defensive. The fact that you called lungfish "ugly" and used that as a criterion for why their sub-forum should be deleted is pretty flawed reasoning. Isn't being ugly a pretty good characteristic of being a monster fish? And let's be honest, bowfin may not be ugly but they're not exactly what most people would call nice-looking either. Even if they became popular, it doesn't mean they deserve a sub-forum. African tigerfish are very popular, and they're just lumped in with the other characins sub-forum.

Yes, I was most certainly attempting to get that knee jerk reaction with my "attack" on the Lungfish. Its an American pride thing! Our Monster is badder than your monster! As always, Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Now who is attacking. My Grumpy is a flat out handsome devil that nobody can deny!

Create the forum traffic and that will inspire the need for a subforum.

Oh boy am I trying. I think that I am going to get a friend to video me hand feeding my Amia Calva. That should be a hit and draw some (pardon the pun) "MONSTER INTEREST"

Maybe something uber gross like a furry mouse getting puff daddied by a badd *** Bowfin. Massive blood and fur should stir em up, right?

There's no need for sarcasm or attempts to stir things up. I merely stated the fact. New subforums are not going to be created just because one person asks for it. All of the individual subforums were created based on interest and activity. Put those two into action and you will get the subforum.

Since I received 'A mark on my permanent record' for selling a big bowfin to another MFK'r that could properly house my monster. I have to say theat this species is illegal in Washington. You won't have the activity of fellow bowfin enthusiasts because we would be chastised for keeping them in our tanks!

I for one looked long and hard for fellow bowfin keepers even before I had one for myself. I found no proof that they were illegal-even when I asked you fellow members! It wasn't until I rehomed mine did I find that not only were they illegal, but I would be reprimanded here on my favorite site?! These are amazing fish with loads of personality if you let them. Just like Piranha and RTC's that get let loose and are now part of the eco system I believe that bowfin should be allowed into the hobby without the ignorance of bureaucracy getting into our tanks.

Beautiful fish that I will post pics and vids onto a dedicated sub forum that included this species!

There is a poll right now in the gar section about what your favorite gar species is. I listed the bowfin as an option since it is the only other holostei. Bowfin lovers should go vote for it, it could help get some numbers together or at least generate some discussion.

There are no rules about what you keep in your tanks. there are many members here that keep fish that they shouldn't. It is up to you if you want to announce whether or not you are keeping illegal species. Staff will only intervene when they are being bought as sold as MFK could be potentially held liable for allowing it to happen.

LOL...."getting puff daddied",good one.A.calva has always been one of my favorite fish to keep.Although they are not related, bowfin are the closest thing to a legal snakehead in this country but they have never been readily available.

I'd love some info on that guy.. Are they cold water, what's an average size, temperment? Looks badass, how can I get one?

They grow pretty fast and can reach 24 inches plus and up to 10 pounds. they can live in very oxygen depleated water by breathing air via their swim bladder. They are agressive carnivores that will attempt to eat anything. make sure it is the smallest fish if you want to try tankmates. They live all over the states and southern canada in warm water lakes like sunfish and bass, but can survive warmer water if needed. they raise young in a similar fasion to snakeheads. the male will aggressively protect the eggs. When the eggs hatch the male will collect them into a little cloud that follows him around and often completely surrounds him until they are around 1-2 inches long The babies school for a litle while but they grow more territorial as they age. Easiest way to get them is to catch your own.

Neat fact: they are the closest living relative of the giant fish leedsichthys, which may have grown the size of a humpback whale
