How large a sump Do I need?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From what i learned here is that you would want the sump to be at least 1/3 the size of your main tank, so maybe at least a 20 gallon, I see it as the bigger the better.

1/4 to 1/3 is the general rule. If it is lightly stocked or light bioload fish, smaller will be fine. If you find that your smaller one isn't enough, you could always swap it out for a larger one or supplement it with a canister or hob (which should be done, anyway). Sumps have the largest bio areas. While more is better, even a sump that is too small will still have more bio capacity than a properly sized canister or hob.
