Hi,
After 8 days refusing food and sulking at the bottom, my 8yr old Oscar's symptoms did not improve, and he began looking drastically worse in the past 36hrs. I finally decided to euthanize him in a 5g container with clove oil. I mixed the clove oil (2.5ml/gallon) with an immersion blender beforehand so it fully emulsied. He was unconscious almost immediately upon going in, zero gill movement. I waited 10min, then added 50ml of clove, and fully emulsified it. He's been in that for 1hr, still no gill movement, and his big eyes don't react to light at all. How long before I can be 100% sure he is dead, and not just deeply anesthetized? I plan to bury him, but I want to be positive, and would prefer not to decapitate him.

Thanks.

Should be done after about 10min.

Some advise to place fish in freezer, after they have fallen asleep, to make sure it doesn't come back. Apparently, they are known to come back sometimes.

Sorry for the loss. It’s tough to do it but sometimes it’s for the best.
I’ve had to do it a few times myself. I found that ten to fifteen minutes after last gill movement will suffice.
You could then place in the freezer if you are concerned.
I never did the freeze thing. I figured after 15min with no oxygen they were done anyway.
The only way I could see a fish coming back would be after only a sedative dose and then they would need to be removed from the clove treatment and return to fresh water.
