how long before cleaning filter

wats the longest any one has gone without opening and cleaning an external filter i have a fx5 which i havent touched rot 5 months and its still going strong clear water
 
I would open her up clean it - it also depends on what media you are using too and if that needs to be changed.....I have an Fx5 I open it once a month at least
 
Don't know about canister, but I clean my HOB once every couple months

I would clean it every month even if it still seems to be running well and the water is "clear".It's running your clear water through all the junk its taken out of the tank.Open it up and get the junk out.
 
I've got a ehiem 2028, and 2 rena xp 3's on my 125g african tank.......I try to alternate and clean 1 every 2 weeks to a month depending on when I have the time and or energy........my other 2 tanks w/ hob's usually every 3 weeks or so or at water change time I'll clean of the pads.........although it's been about 6 wks now w/o a cleaning and my emperor 400 is running strong on my 30g exo tank and the water is crystal clear!!!

If your bioload does not require these short cleaning intervals, you may be better off not to disturb the biomedia that often...

ive only had fluval canisters myself, but i crack mine once a week to at least rinse the mech. nitrate traps.
