How long do aquarium heaters last?

How long do aquarium heaters last? I have had trouble heating my Discus tank to 85 F and just realized that the heaters are turning off before the tank is getting up to temp. I have an external temp control so they are turned all of the way up. I have 3 separate heaters and are different brands. 300 W, 300W, and 400W. it is a 150 gal tank.
 
what is your heating system designed for? 85 kind of warm unless fighting ick, why not 77 to 79 or so?
 
Not of discus. they want a min temp of 82 F I should the heaters added up it should be 1000 W of heaters in 125 gallons of water
 
you run your heater at an angle rather than straight up and down?
