Picked up a small school of them today. I keep reading everything from they are seasonal fish to as much as seven years. Can anyone close the gap on this? I keep them with my angels and ghost, because neons get eaten.

if your neons were eaten, eventually the cardnals will be food also... Everytime I've kept cardinals they ended up being eated by some type of fish I was growing out with them (small geophagus, angels, and recently festivums, I figured these fish were to small to eat them, but I was wrong), so I'm not really sure on how old they can get to be.

Cardinal tetras are no exception. What fits the mouth goes in the mouth.

Cardinals are seasonal in the wild because they live/breed where it floods.
In captivity you can keep them upto 10 years.

If my memory serves me correctly all neons are wild caught so you never really know how old the fish you just bought is if its full grown
