I've got a WC pair of Columbian umbees from The Wet Spot and I was wondering if they ever lose their red forehead. I originally thought it was a juvenile trait but my male is in the 11"-12" range and still has it. Anyone else out there ever experienced this. Here is a photo. It's not good but you can see what I'm talking about.

I love the addition of the red head and the photo doesn't really do it justice but I was just wondering if I should expect it to go away. It's funny all my friends comment on how they like his red head and I'm kind of perplexed as to what to say.

Perhaps. I hope you're right and he keeps it. For reference that's him in my avatar about a year ago right when I purchased them and he began to develope the color.

the color will become more and less intense depending mood. The majority of rio mags tend to have the red head, it is one of the traits i look for in my umbees:) hes nice good luck.

That's interesting because I always assumed he was a Rio Mag fish even though the tag didn't specify it. I chose him out of a very divided up 125 even at 5 inches or so. He was barely hanging on to the middle of the tank but by far had the best coloration. The only reason I took the female was she was the only fish that was allowed to remain in his space for any length of time. His competitors were a good inch or so bigger but much more haggard.

well it looks like they chose eachother from the get go;) as far as being rio mag.. well everyone claims or calls them colombian blues, but to my knowledge all of the blue umbees collected are from the rio magdalena river basin. Umbeeking is the only one i know of who has collected and distributed Blue umbees from different locations other than the rio mag. I may be wrong but im pretty sure that what everyone else is selling are the mags. and theres nothing wrong with them:)
