My 5 inch retic ray so far, spends ages grazing and chomping in food.
2 or 3 hours eating all the left over food on the bottom, and moving all around the tank to get it.

Is it normal for them to eat like this?

Healthy rays tend to consistently search for food until they are full. Once they have gotten enough, they seem to not search for food so much. Some rays are just plain greedy while others' appetites are not as strong. For instance, I have a few rays that will eat until they appear to possibly explode at any moment and will still search for food. But I also have some that will eat one to three worms and then no more. Consider yourself blessed...Some people can't get their rays to eat;).

I am definitely not trying to lecture you, and I'm very glad that you at least came to us here to get help with your ray (which is a very good thing, because rays can be difficult sometimes), but it seems to me that you haven't got much research under your belt about this kind of stuff.

Please, please read the stickies in their entirety. Please. Rays are such awesome animals and I really do always want the best for them. Even beyond that, ask any questions that could possibly come to mind about their care.

Always dissolve the salt first, always treat the water that you use in water changes (before it goes into your tank), change about 25% of your tank's water at least twice a week, never medicate your ray without getting a diagnosis (or at least check with us here to see if the medication is ray-safe)... I could go on and on. Just please do research about these creatures.

They are totally worth the best care you could possibly give them.

Firstly thanks for advice, it is much appreciated. Secondly, your right I did not do loads of research, just some. However I will certainly
Catch up and digest all the stickies quick time. And anything that is not covered I'll be sure to ask here if not sure.
It's just a bit of luck that My retic has had no problems at all eating. Glad you like the new retic:-)

Ray research is almost a never ending process. Abortedsoul has had some tremendous experiences with rays...as have I but I definitely do things quite differently than what he explained their care entails. You will find that there are a variety of opinions from some very experienced keepers on MFK and abroad, and you will need to sus out what works the best for you. Good luck...it seems you have started on a great foot...at least as far as the ray's appetite is concerned.

cause nobody here has ever asked a stupid question...
