just built and started up my first wet dry filter. its for a 30 gal and is made from a 10 gal. Right now all ive got in there is the prefilter and the bio balls. Is there anything else i should add to the filter. It is for freshwater. Right now ive got an established hang on filter and the wet dry running, and i have a pike, shovelnose cat and 3 small/medium oscars.

So how long should I keep the hang on filter running until I use only the wet dry?

bout 6 weeks for it to cycle. Its how long it takes for your benificial bacteria to grow and sustain the tank.

Why not leave the hang on filter, I always like to have a back up incase something happens!

You also have quite a few fish in there... I would try and have both filters running...

BTW, you will need a larger tank in the NEAR future!!

Being that the tank has already cycled with the hang on filter, the wet/dry should come up to speed a lot quicker as it doesnt have to wait for the whole cycle(ie. the bacteria is already present in your system it just needs to populate the wet/dry filter).

As others have said, unless you need the hang on filter for something else I'd leave it there, but the wet dry should be right to go in a couple of weeks I would think. But there is no way to tell for sure besides removing the hang on filter and keeping an eye on the water parameters to make sure the wet/dry is working ;)

Filter redundancy is always a good choice.
