Hey guys I've picked up an RTG Arowana recently. She's about 35cm.
And just wondering when she'll start eating? It's been about 3 days, but before that the owner hadn't fed it for like 4 days already.

Would they usually take more than a week to start getting use to the tank and it's environment to start eating? Would it help if i keep the lights off for awhile?

Also, I think she tried to jump out one time because her Barbels were damaged the other day, and now it's only got half barbels, how long will it take for this to heal up?

Any help would be appreciated.

Water is pretty much perfect
PH = 7
Temp = 27-28 Degrees Celsius
Tank = 180g, 70g sump

Regards,
Steve

temps could be a tad higher.
At that age, she can fast for more than a month. Leave her be and do not stress her and yourself.

Barbels may or may not grow back. You are lucky it wasn't the tail she broke.

Thanks for the input Miguel.
Should I up the temp to about 30?
Do the barbels heal like a Silver Aro? Cos my Silver did the same thing and within a month or 2 it's healed up quite nicely.

Aeound 30, yes, to up its metabolism.

I find that asians barbels heal worse than silvers

Nothing wrong with your temperature. No need to up it. It's very good as it is.
Your RTG should start eating around now, try crickets, superworms, as they are favourites.

Barbels should grow back to normal in a few weeks.

Can you Pm me where and how much it cost you, and did you get certificate.

that temp is ok, though i find that my rtg is on 28 to 30. not below 28.
metabolism will get higher, the thing is the bigger the arowana, the slower it settles in. they get more stressed during transport. largely because they are bigger and the size between them and the container is less whent hey are bigger.

just hold up and as long as your water is good. temp is 28 to 30. you will be ok.

try putting in waxworm larva or mealworms.
just dont ge them spoilt on it!

my rtg has ripped its barbel, grewy back, and broken its tail, bottom bit snapped off during transport...grew back too, you can tell where it is if you look closely but generally, untrain eyes can neve tell

Thanks for all of the help guys, my RTG is now eating :) I just went downstairs and put some superworms in, and she went straight for them. I also tried Hikari Food Sticks, she eats it and spits it back out :irked:

When I transported my RTG I did it with a large foam box, air pump and masking tape around to seal the lid. I was told by the owner that, when it was small/young it's tail got cut. And now it's grown into a diamond shaped tail haha :) I like it though

Regards

glad to hear its eating , all aros love superworms in my experience....and you can feed your superworms carrots so that they are jam packed with beta carotine...
if it doesnt like the pellets a cheap alternative is to buy some tialapia fillets and krill as some other supliments ...my rtgs love this stuff and more

Yeah that's what I've been putting in my Superworm farm. Just cut up pieces of carrot's I replace them every week to maintain moisture.

I will be going to the fish markets tomorrow to buy some prawns and krill.
Thanks heaps guys :)
