Hi, I'm new to the forum but I'm very impressed with the knowledge base of the members of this forum. I recently started with discus and am having an issue introducing new foods to my guys. The breeder i got them from fed them blood worms and the problem I'm having is introducing new foods. I've tried starving them for 2 days and realized they're just not recognizing the flakes or pellets as food. So starving them didn't work. So what I have been doing is giving them younger blood worms along with a variety of different foods in bowl, I have them bowl trained and they will take blood worms from my hand. The only other food outside of bloodworms they'll take are algae wafers. How long does it take to train them to eat different foods? I've tried and failed with mysis shrimp, do you think i should try brine and mosquito larvae? I've just spent a handsome amount of cash buying different goods to see what they'll take. I've tried home recipes, garlic soaked foods, and ocean nutrition flakes and frozen food, nothing outside of algae wafers has worked.

give it time. discus are a most fickle fish concerning food. my wilds won't eat mysis, but they eat everything else although it took awhile before they took the flake. bloodworms alone is not a good diet. if you don't mind the cost, try Mal's freeze dried blackworms. very high in protien and I have never heard of discus not eating them. my fish go crazy for them. a bit expensive but IMO well worth it.

IME, it usually takes a couple of weeks for the discus to recognize other foods. Mine will usually take the bloodworms and algae wafers, but take a while to eat the NLS that I feed them. They usually catch on when they see the others eating it, but it may take a while.
