Ok - got a massive sack of peat moss, its cheap, cost effective, jsut wondering some say boil it or eat it gently, get the tannins and add tot ank.
Siome say put it in a bucket of water, and tannins will soak out.
none the less, questions are

1) when boiled, how long will the peat juice last? Do i chill it in the fridge?
2) Should i just not boil it as boiling may destroy goodness in peat?
3) should i just soak it in water for half a day and put it in a stocking in the filtration so its mroe natural?

my problem arise from the peat being dry and floating in the sump - then it doesnt leech brown goodies which i want for my tanks, i want the black water look

I would not boil it....In a sump I always just submerge it with a stocking and a rock. The tannins dont expire but will be removed by water changes and carbon, the peat usually last quite a while but will eventually quit giving off tannins. Give it time and it will turn dark, always start out with less than you think you will need and adjust how much peat you are useing off that.

Finally, some people who LIKE tannin stained water. Too many people around here love the crystal clear look. JK47 is gonna be a happy man when he finds this thread.

I would advise exactly what LD50 suggested. Good luck, post pics!
