I started out with a HOB filter, and then got an FX5 about a month ago. I want to pull the HOB filter off and just have the FX5. You think it's cool after a month from being completely brand new bio?
Lots of variables and probably is ok, but if it were me, I'd dose the tank with Seachem Stability just to make sure. I love that stuff...and love the FX5!
As mentioned, you just use the bio media from your old filter into the fx5 and/or squeeze out the sponge in the old filter into the fx5 as it has the bb. No need to buy anything else. Save your money on new fish.
My HOB is super tiny, so there wouldn't be much of any bio media at all anyways, but I've had this FX5 running some time now. How long does it take to fully establish BB on it's own?
After running the filterfor a month on your tank, the media inside the FX-5 should be well colonized by beneficial bacteria. It should be safe to remove the HOB filter.
Alright cool. That gives me a clue how long my next FX5 should run to be self sustaining too. I ordered another one for my 125 I'm setting up now. Thanks.
