How long does it take for a 2"x2" piece of Christmas Moss to completely carpet a 10 gallon tank?

Im using a 1.5 wpg 5000k light with no CO2.

Any kind of suggestion or help would be appreciated. Im completely new to growing plants but not fish keeping. Im just looking for a slow growing easy to maintain carpet plant.

If its java moss it should carpet pretty quick. I ripped all my moss up in pieces and put in in mesh and tied it doewn to the back wall and rocks on the bottem. Took about 2-3 months to fill in nice. 4-5 months i was already trimming a little.
If your starting with just a solid 2x2 piece its going to take awhile. Chistmas grows a little slower than java i believe. co2 would definatly help out. Your should should survice. Thats about all i can help out. good luck

How does this moss stuff work? I dont want to buy mesh sheets and sandwich the moss. I want the tank to be as natural as possible.

Im looking to just shred up the moss and stick each individual strand in my substrate (mixture of pebbles and fine grains) a few inches apart.. Would that work or would it just grow all over the place?

Im probably going to go with something like a 6x6.

It will grow everywhere unless you keep up with maintainance. I used mesh for the back wall and a couple rocks and the moss grows out through the holes in the mesh eventually covering it completly so its just a wall of moss. Very natural. Moss should be secured to something until the roots can establish and grab on which will take a little while. Carpet requires trimming to keep the plant the same length so everything gets light. If you space things out like that you will be fine. Just make sure nothing will uproot the plants. A full carpet like that is a ***** to clean, which is why i did the wall and only a couple rocks and a little in sand.
