i just replaced my main penguin HOB filter for my 55 gallon with a eheim canister filter. my tank is fully cycled and i have an established small 20g HOB filter that i used in addition to the penguin. i am curious how long it will take for the new canister to fully develop all of the neccesary bacteria... i am hoping that my tank doesn't go through some sort of mini cycle with the 20g HOB providing the only biological filtration for the time being. any tips?

i would cut back on feeding and do a few more smaller waterchanges than usual.
i actually do this even when using all the filter media from one filter to another and did so when setting up my first fx5 i had to add around a 3rd new media as i removed some i did not want to use.
my tank was fine although it is a 180 gal and more water is easier to maintain.
as for time i am not sure too many factors to consider.

Yes, you will have a cycling problem anywhere from a slight ammonia spike to almost a complete re-cycling...Depends on how old you tank is. Older (well established) ones have bacteria in the tank (on plants/gravel anything in the tank). This will help the tank coast thru some changes.

Just did it as in 5 minutes ago?

Can you take some of the old media and put it in the new filter? If not take some out of the still running filter to speed things up.

Time wise depends on bio-load. 1-2 weeks if lucky.

Use one of the bottled bacteria to help kickstart things in a hurry.

thanks guys. ill try and add some old media to the new filter or get some of the bottled stuff if i can. my tank has been running for years so hopefully there will not be any huge cycle issues.
