ok i just added play sand to my tank yesterday and woke up this morning and its still very cloudy in the tank, how long does it take for the sand to clear up and how can i speed up this process if there is a way?

sand should not take a day to clear up...maybe the sand was dirty therfore the water is cloudy, if so, you would need a quick water change.

DId you rinse the sand? I too have used play sand in tanks and I couldn't believe how cloudy it was even after rinsing a TON. So i can only imagine how dusty the sand would be if it wasn't rinsed. it took about 24 hours for my tank to clear. Are you cycling too? when BB is forming it can cloud the water slightly too

I did this, mucho grande WC's was the only way I got the super fine silt out, and there was still a bit left I loaded up my Magnum350 with DE and it pulled the rest of it all out.

play sand is quite fine if you didnt rinse well that could be the cause just perform some water changes and run some polyfill in the filter itl clear

thanks everyone for the info, did a water change yesterday and my tank is clear now

I would like to say, if you're using sand. for gods sake rinse it until you can't rinse any more. then rinse it some more. And again.

2 days ago I was setting up my 2nd 29 long and decided to use sand. Bought playsand, filled the tank, added sand, and I had 30 gallons of mud.

24 hours later it was the same, I could barely read the thermometer which hangs on a suction cup on the inside (about 1/4 inch from the glass).

3 complete water changes later, I'm still slightly foggy.

Now, I'm the idiot who decided it would be awesome to put the tank in 'the manroom', the 3rd floor of my townhouse which has no plumbing. 1 fill + 3 water changes 120 gallons up the steps... 90 gallons down. I'm exhausted!

rinse your sand first!

Mine did the same thing, i forgot to rinse the sand before i put it in the tank and it stayed cloudy for a couple days but after that it was good.

pool filter sand is much cleaner...
