How long has your plywood tank lasted ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im buiding 1 at the mo but i always clad my stands and canopies with ply.

as long as the exterior is treated like an outdoors piece of equip. ie resealed every 2 yrs with exterior lacquer and the interior is done first time right. the answer is a helluva lot longer than the chipboard lid that came with my first and last LFS tank...

now thats a question i cant answer. im not much older than 30! ive not seen a glass tank in cond over 6 years old. scratches and chips etc

my old mans had a pond in the garden since b4 i was born. he recoats it every 5 years or so. ive got home made wood furniture thats treated yearly to a rub down and varnish thats older than me.

do you know of a LFS stand thats lased well, more than 5 years?

from what i know fibreglass is is very durable.

as long as all the joints are covered in fiberglass, no moving of the tank or flexing, and the tank is sealed and filled with water. other than termites lol i dont see any reason to get any less than 10- 15 years. im thinking longer. we will soon know once a few members start hitting that mark.

Lol I'm 29 myself. But I have had tanks that were old as 20-25 years from people used an were fine. I revealed them to be safe I anyway but they didn't leak when I got them. I know people that have had tanks for over 25 years without a issue I usually build my own stand so that last lol

Yea that's what I figure.. I want to build. 1000-1500 plywood next year but once it's built it won't be moved but I will take my time an do everything right an overkill on everything so hoping I can get 15- 20 years out of it .. Will be my last upgrade (indoors). Outdoors I have other plans lol

wow, a tank over 6 years. honestly if you go to our towns tip, you always see the remnants of a few fish tanks smashed up at the bottom of the glass skip!
damnable throw away society:(

There is a LFS here that has 25+ year-old plywood tanks, although one finally did spring a leak this year. The tanks range from ~200-400 gallons.
