Hey guys so I was thinking about getting a Midevil and growing it out in a 40b. My lfs has some around 2in. If I keep him in good condition water and he is fed regularly, how long would you say I should be able to keep him in the 40 before moving to a bigger tank?

My rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water per inch of cichlid(s), so if it were me, I'd move it to something larger if it hit 4".
at 8 inch it will have 4.5x fish length sideways and 2x width ways, equivalent to a 12 inch Oscar in a 4.5ft x 2ft.
as duanes says most wouldn't consider this a good size for an 8 inch fish but if you have a definite upgrade planned then imo a year is doable and its probably better in the hands of an mfk member than a random fish keeper with no clue!-)

I really can not say how long you can keep him in there. I see someone said 1 year. I believe it could very well be 2 years. Also if it is just that 1 fish he also is not going to have stunted growth if circumstances causes him to be housed there longer than expected.
I think he will fill a 40b visually at 8-10 months and look cramped by a year. Depends on genetics of course.
I haven't kept any of the true monsters yet (dovii,umbee,pbass etc.) But I refuse to give a single fish more than a 75 with just substrate in it.
My midevils in a 40g maybe about a dozen in there ( I used to breed them) grew very quickly. When they got to 4 inches I would put them in a 200 gallon tank and sell them. They grow quick with frequent water changes and a healthy diet. I love looking at the midevils some morph colors very nicely. I had a guy who was all black and had a orange fohawk lol
