how long should i clean play sand

after deciding to go with play sand i am wondering how long i should clean it any suggestions

pour it in a 5 gallon bucket and let the hose run in it till it is clear water coming out of the bucket....also i have read that you can put the sand in a pillow case and let the hose run in there till its clear, play sand takes awhile to clean...
