I picked up an aquaclear filter last saturday and set it up with the media from my old filter on top of the sponge. How long should I leave the old media in there?

Well the aquaclear should have ceramic media on top of the sponge. I would leave old meadi in the new tank until there is no ammonia or nitrtites in the tank. Then depending on how much old media versues new media, take some of the old out little by little. Keeping an eye on the ammonia and nitrite levels.

umm ok i'm confused. What is the goal of the new filter and why the old media? Is the old media from a filter on the same tank?

Yes to seed the new filter? The aquaclear is an upgrade from the weak HOB I had.

If you put a new filter on an established/cycled tank, the new filter will cycle and grow bacteria on it's own. BB does not free float much but it does enough so that new filters will populate.

Thanks for the info. I always thought you had to seed a new filter.

You have to seed a new tank, but like a said if it's a new filter to a well esablished tank no need.

Some people will do this for 2 or 3 weeks then put the new filter on a new tank and have a fatser cycle that way, since the new filter got going on a cycled tank.

Clean sponges once a month.........Leave the cermaic, or biological filtration, to soak in the filter for two to three months.....And when you clean it, do not really rinse it thorouly, just rinse quick, removing the large debris and leaving the good bacteria...........
