I never used to quarantine new fish until I had a huge ick outbreak in my wifes livebearer tank when adding some platies from petco. Lesson learned:irked:

I just picked up a (I guess bellycrawler) pike cichlid and put him in a 10g quarantine tank. How long should I keep him in there until I know he's good to go into my 150g? Thanks!

:iagree: 4 weeks minimum. Be patient and don't take shortcuts. You'll feel more relaxed and comfortable if you are consistent with a long quarantine period just to protect your much older valuable fish.

I quarantine for a full month of health, if they become ill the qt period starts over again after their treatment is complete.

Woot you guys are really through with the quarantine. I only quarantine them for 1 week since I know my LFS owner personally and she quarantine them for like 1 month before putting any of them for sales (thus the 1 week of quarantine is just a precaution for me and to observe them closerly).

This cannot be said for some other LFS would sell the fish the moment it arrives without any treatment or so. So if you are not sure if your LFS does quarantine, go for 4 weeks.

I am insanely paranoid after working in a store with 80 seperated tanks I had full control over and 6 of my own with a "showcase fish" in each...
One month minimum.
The QT tank I have right now has been good for almost 3 months, I'm almost ready to consider them safe. I know they are, I'm just so concerned since I've seen so many strange things pop up just as I thought things were safe..
I literally do WCs, feedings, and all other tank maintenance in the order of which had fish added last.
It's crazy. Especially when I have 3 tanks with no added anything in the last 3 years.

There should be a sticky thread regarding quarantine procedures. I agree that 4 weeks minimum is safest. :)
