How long should I cycle a new 240 gallon tank for? I will be transferring a cycled/established fluval 404 to it, which is still running in my 50 gallon. Of course the fluval 404 is not my final filtration source for the 240gallon. Would transferring some water from the 50gallon speed up process? Sorry as it's my first 'big' tank :nilly:

With the info you have given its almost impossible to tell that maybe a week maybe a year...
How are you cycling it: Fish or fishless
Did you add anything chemicals: To help it cycle or add gravel from your old tank in your media?
Do you have a test kit: are you using it what does it read?
When did you start...

I would think that transferring water would speed it up but I don't know that for sure.

I have not started, as the tank is being built. It should be ready this weekend.

I will be going with the fishless method and will be using Seachem stability. I'll be keeping it bare-bottom.

Sorry for the not-so-informative information.

I moved all my fish from my 55 gallon to my 220 gallon in 24 hours. Filled the tank, heated the water installed a *New* sump, and then hooked up the canister that was filtering the 55 gallon to the sump. Never lost a fish or saw any sings of stress, if the filter media in the canister was enough to filter the waste out of the 55 then it was enough to filter it out of my 220.

Now note I said filter media meaning the bacteria was enought to consume what the fish produced, I still needed higher turn over rate to help with the larger tank. So if you get creative with how you use the filter media from your established filter in the new filter you should be able to just move them over. Maybe add prime for a couple days if you need it.

Thats my 2 cents

I'd have to guess between 2 1/2 weeks to 4 weeks its a little harder to get your BB to build up in new and large tanks :D

I think adding gravel from my established tank in little bags that let water pass through helped my tank. If I was you I would add it to yours and make sure you get a good tester and test every few days so you know where your tank is

A good luck with your first large tank :D Your on your way to building a monster tank any day now :ROFL::ROFL:

well i just set up my 125 yesturday and i transfered four established filters to the new tank. level today are almost back to normal. i should be cycled in a couple days
