When you put veggies and other foods in your tanks how long do you leave them in there for? can they be left in there till completely consumed (days possibly)?

Ive always just left them in over night and removed them in the am. I think like 10 hours was the longest ive left them in for.
I'll leave them 24 hrs and if there happens to be any left I take it out. Not because it'd hurt the water quality but because they get soft and smelly after 24 hrs. The snails still like em' like that but yick.
